SAN MARTIN TILCAJETE
San Martin Tilcajete is a lost town on the shores of Oaxaca, popularly known as "land of the alebrijes.” The carnival tradition here amazes those who are lucky enough to stroll along its still dirt roads and between its walls of adobe. Handmade masks, groups of children and adults wax and paint themselves black or silver, transsexual princes and monsters of all kinds meet at the mayor's house and then go out on the streets to scream, jump, drink and dance to the rhythm of bells. The day ends with an awards ceremony for the best groups, masks and costumes with categories of children and adults, and with the representation of a wedding. These photos were taken in March 2017.
