PUNK IS NOT DEAD

El Chopo has been called “the temple of Mexican counterculture,” and the “Rock capital.” The El Chopo Tianguis has been an iconic center of Mexico City’s underground cultures and youth identities for over 35 years. It was conceived as a space to exchange underground music and any swag related to music in order to support artists and independent labels. Most importantly, however, El Chopo was founded as a form of resistance to the right-wing, conservative culture set on suppressing and quashing any manifestations of radical dissidence, rebellion, or counter-culture. When people of alternative identities and groups were excluded from other tianguis, they found a voice and a place in El Chopo. The love of music along with an openness to divergent and radical beliefs brought many people together. This spirit lives on and has kept people who clash with norms of society together throughout the years.
